“Respect Women and Their Right is Respect for the Society and the State” Alike

On 30/10/2016, Tammuz organization for social development in Dhi-Qar governorate held a dialogue symposium on Women reality and their political and social rule under the umbrella of the Iraqi constitution and International conventions and covenants, it was held at the directorate of employment, training and social insurance in the governorate of Dhi-Qar. The symposium was dedicated for the female employees and trainees of the directorate in solidarity with the International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The meeting was called to order by our colleague Razzaq Obaid-Dhaher thanking the participants for their attendance and interaction with the symposium and welcoming the attendants.
Then, our colleague Razzaq provided an overview of the organization of Tammuz and its activities from its establishment to the current year. Afterwards, the reality of women in Iraq was reviewed as well as the most important fields they had held in line with a comprehensive vision after the fall of the dictatorial regime, the percentage granted to them in the parliament and provincial councils (Quota) and the general situation of women also was reviewed.

The items of Human Rights List 1948, was reviewed by the lecturer, as well as the 18 item of the International Compact 1966, he also addressed the convention of CEDAW and Shadow reports which earned Iraq quite a reputation after submission of such periodic reports had been lagging behind, then the lecturer provided concrete examples on problems that faced by women as well as challenges included what happens in courts after the occurrence of a series of violations like oppression and domestic violence and the crimes of ISIS against women.
After the floor for questions and exchange views was opened, there were many interventions by the participants focused on a group of important topics, where some recommendations were made for the symposium the most notably of which were:
- 1-The need to give women a greater role in various fields through other legislation added to the previous legislation that guarantees the rights of women.
2-Eliminate the financial need of women through the creation of jobs, especially since many young women are graduates of colleges and institutes.
3-Awareness within the family to respect women at home, school, college, department, factory and any other place where women may be present in order to provide a public service.
4- Benefit from civil society organizations, and support them in the field of awareness and education, as well as advocacy and highlight the successes of women and activate the role of media also in this aspect.
5- Attention should be paid to rural women and to the outdated traditions and oppression they suffer from, It is possible to get help from tribal chiefs and clerics to change this painful reality that deprive women of education and normal life.
6- Lay governmental foundations and programmes and open centers of education and training for women and benefit from their capacities, especially in towns and rural areas.
7- Reaffirm the opening of more literacy centers for girls, as well as the development of social care homes for girls who lost their families.
In the conclusion of the symposium, the attendants were thanked for their interaction and participation in exchanging views so that women can obtain their rights. It is worth mentioning, that the organization of Tammuz had participated in preparing the shadow report dedicated for Human Rights as well as holding many symposiums and training workshops including holding many workshops on the convention of CEDAW.
