“ Democracy Is the Way for the Social Development” The Young Leaders Workshop in Basra

In cooperation with Friedrich-Ebert foundation, the second  training workshop  of the young leaders program 2017 was held by TOSD on 17and 18 of March at the international Basra Hotel in Basra province.

The workshop started with a welcoming dinner on the evening of the 16th of March. The dinner was attended by the representatives of TOSD, namely Vain Ali Al-sheikh , the chairman  of TOSD , and Evan Al-faily , the coordinator of the Young Leaders program , and from the Friedrich-Ebert foundation Ms. Anja Feller, the resident manager for Friedrich-Ebert foundation in Iraq and Jordan, and Mr. Yousif Ibrahim , the coordinator for Iraq programs at the  foundation. After the welcoming words and introduction of the trainers and the program the opening session was concluded and the schedule was set to continue next day.
The first day of the training  included a clarification of two principles “ Social democracy and social justice” , and a detailed explanation in terms of the concepts and bases ,  constituents and challenges. The training was conducted by Mr. Mahmoud Abdulfattah from Egypt, and Abdulrazzaq Ali who identified these principles to the students and the relation between democracy and social justice and the concept of legal empowerment of the poor and its relation with the development, producing social policies, and identifying the difference between procedural and social democracy .
The training was distinguished with the activation of the young participation by dividing them into six groups creating a team work environment which encouraged the exchange of opinions and thoughts to find solutions suitable to be adopted in  the application of  social justice in Iraq by focusing on the amendment of some legal legislations and reforming them as well as legislating a guarantying laws and showing interest in the youth and production sectors etc. which help in the achievement of the social justice.
On the second day of training, the economic , social , and cultural rights were identified as they acknowledged in the articles 22-36 of the Iraqi constitution. The young leaders were divided into  three groups ; each group had to discuss how to activate these laws to achieve the principles of these constitutionally-stated laws as well as defining the social policies existing in Iraq and the challenges facing the application of the social justice.
During the training, some internationally recognized experiences were discussed as models for the countries that adopted the social democracy and achieved for a large extent social justice; these experiences from the European states and some of the Latin America.
The workshop was wrapped up at the end of the second day with a high estimation of the participants and trainers for the important nature of the topics and the knowledge acquired.

It is worth mentioning that this training workshop was the second out of 8 workshops in the young leaders program 2017. It is a program currently being implemented by TOSD in cooperation with Friedrich-Ebert foundation for the second year in a row with the participation of 40 young men and women from the entire country. The aim of the program is to invest in the young potentials, raising awareness amid rapid changes in the Arab world, encouraging connection among the young participants from different provinces in a preparation step to join politics and civil society notably after the remarkable success the program achieved in its first session 2015-2016 in which a group of active young participants took part from all over Iraq and today they have a more active  civil presence.
