Under the slogan of “For a tolerant society free from violence”

Under the slogan of “For a tolerant society free from violence”

Tammuz Organization for Social Development held a dialogue seminar on violence in the hall of Tammuz in the city of Nasiriyah in Governorate of Dhi- Qar on 30 March 2017.

After welcoming the attendants and demonstrating the objective of the seminar, which is to reject the manifestations of violence as a culture and as a behavior, by activating the role of activists, employees in the government’s departments and their participation in educating citizens, spreading the culture of acceptance of the others and tolerance.
The seminar was attended by representatives of the Human Rights Office in Dhi -Qar, the Electoral Commission, the Women's Forum of the Ministry of Sport and Youth, the Educational Supervision, civil society organizations and media activists from Dhi Qar Governorate..
The lecturer addressed and classified the definition of violence and its types, forms, manifestations and the effects it leaves on the individual and society alike, explaining the history of violence in the world and its causes in our society today, which focuses on extremism of ideas, beliefs and opinions which are the main reasons for violence.
The definition of violence, which was limited, formerly, to the physical harm and its definition of the United Nations Charter, also was mentioned as all that causes psychological, verbal and physical harm. Also were_  reviewed, the international conventions against all forms of violence,  and how to reduce them in our society.
After permitting the discussion with the attendants, and presenting a lot of examples and manifestations in our lives, some ideas and suggestions were raised to reduce the manifestations of violence and eliminate it, which we summarize in the following points:
1. Continuing to hold such seminars, and illuminating workshops.
2. Women should be particularly sensitized to their basic rights and men should be made aware of the importance of respecting women's rights.
3. To focus on the illuminating of rural and uneducated women.
4. Benefit from the laws and the activation of punitive texts against individuals and groups who practice violence in all its forms.
5. The need for the media to take its illuminating role in renouncing violence and introducing its dangers and effects.
6. Give a greater role to civil society organizations in this regard.
7. Modification of the Laws, clauses that allow “disciplined violence.
As those in the Iraqi Penal Code.
8. It is important that clerics and clans leaders take their reformist role in society in terms of renouncing violence and extremism and accepting the others.
9. The need to legislate laws against domestic violence.
10. Dissemination of the community culture with the duties and rights of the marital relationship to reduce the cases of violence and divorce, which are escalating with frightening numbers.
11. Provide suitable employment opportunities and adopt a plan to improve the economic reality of individuals, which would reduce many problems and practices of violence.
It is worth mentioning that Tammuz Organization for Social Development holds dozens of purposeful seminars and awareness campaigns at its annual programs in Nasiriyah and the whole of Iraq to achieve social development based on the respect and the exercise of rights, freedoms and access to equality and social justice.
