Under the slogan of “Respect for women and their rights is respect for society and the state”

Under the slogan of “Respect for women and their rights is respect for society and the state”

On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in the city of Nasiriyah, and at the hall of the Directorate of Youth and Sports in Nasiriyah, Tammuz Organization for Social Development held an educational seminar for female graduates of Dhiqar University on the rights of women in Iraqi laws and constitution.

The seminar was opened by colleague Abdul Razzaq Obaid, Director of the Tammuz office in Nasiriyah, who welcomed the attendees and thanked the Youth and Sports Directorate for hosting this symposium.
After in the attendees were introduced to each other, and the program of the seminar was explained, colleague Abdul Razzaq reviewed the reality and rights of women after 2003. The rights of women stipulated in Iraqi law and the Constitution in Articles 14, 20, 22, 29, in addition to the fourth paragraph of Article 49, which guarantee equality and freedom for women as they are for men if applied properly.
The colleague referred to the 1948 Human Rights Charter and the three international deeds issued in 1966 and then presented the CEDAW Convention 1979 which aims to abolish all forms of discrimination against women, which Iraq has signed, and is obliged to implement its items. Iraq's position on these international conventions, which emphasize the importance of respect for human rights and women's rights in all economic, social, political and civil aspects was also clarified, As an international obligation, Iraq is obliged to submit periodic reports on its commitment to these international agreements and contracts. The International Council discusses Iraq with its reports, verifies its information and evaluates Iraq's compliance with each of these agreements.
At the same time, civil society organizations have a role in providing parallel and consistent reports on the reality of such commitments. Reports of organizations are often taken by the International Council.
Part of the seminar was focused on the difficult reality faced by Iraqi women in the context of security, economic and living conditions, and under the extreme influence of social customs and power of men, and the effects of the decline in the level of education, high unemployment and horrific numbers of widows, orphans and divorcees caused by wars, has increased the burden of women on themselves and their families.
During the discussions, many suggestions were presented that contribute to raise the level of women in society by enabling them to exercise their rights. From the point of view of the participants, some solutions were:
1-it’s necessary to find employment opportunities, for female graduates, according to their specialties and benefit from their scientific qualifications.
2-Provide employment opportunities for educated and uneducated in the public and private sectors as part of the economic empowerment of women.
3-Adoption of the Social Security Law provides a token salary to ensure the basic needs of the non-working man until the creation of employment opportunities.
4-To find solutions to reduce the increasing divorce cases through an awareness campaign that emphasizes the prevention of marriage of minors and  encouraging marriage on the basis of equality by targeting clerics and Tribal men, and the importance of activating the special laws of these cases.
5- Raising awareness of women's rights in rural communities and changing the social outlook on them.
6- Apply and activate compulsory education and the extension of it to all stages and the implement of deterrent penalties for those who prevent girls from education and continuing educational attainment.
7- The importance of the existence of studies and real researches for social problems, including suicides of girls to identify the causes and how to reduce them.
8- Application of constitutional articles on women and their rights.
9- Assistance, to those who intend to be married, in marriage costs by the state.
10- The importance of legislation of laws against domestic violence to limit violations against women.
At the conclusion of the seminar, the participants thanked Tammuz for their attention and continuing to hold various seminars to identify the social reality,
its problems and how to improve the human condition by providing those opportunities to hear and listen.
It’s worth mentioning that the Tammuz Organization for Social Development has established many events and activities that contribute to raise legal awareness of international conventions, charters and human rights principles, especially women's rights, whether by raising awareness or legal assistance for women or by pressure on authorities, within campaigns, to legislate laws protecting rights, or standing against legislation that oppresses women and allows discrimination against women.
