Under the slogan of “Women have right, vote and role”

On Wednesday 13 September 2017, at the hall of Al-dawaya youth, Tammuz organization for social development in collaboration with the independent high electoral commission, Dhi Qar office, held an educational seminar on women’s rights and role at election after 2003.

It was held in the presence of the administrative officer of Al-dawaya district Mr. Falih Hassan as well as a number of the local government members in the district, activists and a group of women of the residents of Al-dawaya district and the surrounding areas.

The seminar was initiated by Mr. Razak Obeid Zahir, who thanked the gentlemen for their cooperation in establishing this event and supporting the activities of civil society organizations.

Our colleague began by introducing the organization of Tammuz and its activities, especially the election. He then reviewed historical perspectives on women's participation and struggle to win their rights in the face of marginalization and exclusion, explaining the legal framework and the legal background of women's rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention to the three international human rights instruments.

After that, the colleague referred to the CEDAW agreement and the reports of Iraq submitted in accordance with the agreement and the recommendations of the CEDAW Committee to Iraq to comply with the provisions of the Convention. He reviewed the national laws on women's rights, especially constitutional articles 14, 20, 22, 29 and 49 explaining them in detail.

Then, Ms. Bashaer Ali, from the Independent High Electoral Commission - Dhi Qar gave an overview on the reality of women's participation in the electoral cycles that already took place which explained the reasons for the reluctance of women and its impact on the electoral process as well as the statement of modernization rates throughout the province and the main role that should be played by women towards raising the rate of modernization and voting.

Mr. Razzak, based on an inquiry of one of the participants in the seminar, discussed in a brief summary the St Lego system which was explained by giving real examples of the system, the mechanism of distribution of seats and the representation of blocks.

During the seminar, it was emphasized on the necessity of women's participation in promoting the democratic process and political decision-making, whether by nomination or election, and the importance of the independence of their vote in choosing the best.

At the end of the seminar, activists from civil society organizations in the district of Al-dawaya expressed their thanks and appreciation to Tammuz organization and the High Electoral Commission for setting up this purposeful awareness activity in this region, which is relatively far away from the city.
