The workshop was held with the participation of a number of graduates of universities and institutions.

Our colleague, the lecturer, Razzaq Obaid, intiated the workshop by welcoming the attendants and introducing them to each other, he also gave an overview on Tammuz Organization for Social Development, and then the workshop’s objectives. As a theme of the workshop’s subject, he asked the attendants a question on the concept of rights, and after various answers, our lecturer colleague clarified the contractual mechanisms which are the committees approved by the United Nations and entrusted with international conventions and covenants for the purpose of monitoring the commitment of the member states to apply them and they are:

-Human Rights Committee.

-Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

-Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

-Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

-Committee against Torture.

-Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture.

-Committee on the Rights of the Child.

-Committee on Workers and Migrants.

-Committee on Persons with Disabilities.

During the workshop, it was also stressed on the mechanism on the elimination of discrimination against women which is known as CEDAW, and how to respect the rights enshrined in the covenant and its annexes, and to what extent they are applied especially after the change of regime in Iraq in 2003,

Explaining the obligation imposed on the Iraqi government to write periodic reports, and the role of organizations in monitoring and control, which results in a shadow report on the government report shows the reality and commitment to the Convention from the point of view of civil society, backed by documents and data. He also touched on some constitutional articles on women's rights and national laws and the need to amend some texts and laws to achieve equality and justice, and the role of the legislative, executive and judicial authorities in that.

Some attendants made interventions and queries on women’s rights and real experiences on society influence and its perception of women represented in costumes and traditions led to the non-application of some legal articles and the prevention of the legislation of more just laws that enable women to enjoy their rights. The further influence of those costumes and traditions on rural women life was also mentioned.

The most prominent recommendations summarized by the workshop are the following:

1- The application of domestic laws and international obligations on the rights of women in full and in accordance with a special strategy.

2- The importance of rising awareness and education on women's rights, especially in rural and remote areas.
