On 10\1\2018, Tammuz Organization for Social Development participated in a dialogue seminar under the title of “Elections, between postponement and conducting” in Al-amal educational forum with the presence of the parliamentary deputy and the member of the legal commission in the Iraqi council of Representatives Mr. Kassim Alaboudi, as well as the presence of a number of civil society, human rights activists and representatives of organizations. The sminar was held at Al-amal headquarters at 5.00 PM.
The seminar was initiated
By welcoming Mr.Kassim Al-aboudi and the attendants of the activists, humanitarians and organizations’ representatives, the seminar began with the speaking of the parliamentary member of several essential areas concerning elections and the reasons behind talking about postponement, he clarified that there were several objective and political reasons that lead to this talk. Also, he mentioned that at the time it was expected that there were many electoral lists wouldn’t win the same number of votes that they had previously win in the past elections cycles.
Moreover, the parliamentary member mentioned that the responsibility of the elections’ progress and its results is primarily held by the Iraqi people who should be aware of their rights and choices so they can achieve their country’s interest, for they were still voting on sectarian and personal loyalty basis which could lead to results that may cause the retreat of the political process and the rising of incompetent electoral lists that wouldn’t achieve the public good.
then the door of interventions and discussions opened by the participants in the seminar where it was confirmed what the MP said the people bear the greatest responsibility for the conduct of the elections and their results forgetting that the parties of power is a major cause of the spread of ignorance among the people and weak electoral consciousness.
Emphasis was also placed on adherence to the Constitution, which has a strong relationship with the future of the democratic process in Iraq.
And another intervention stressed that the regional location of the neighboring countries plays an important role in the fate of Iraq and seek to a council of representatives who is loyal to them and implementing their agendas.
There was an intervention by the Tammuz Organization for Social Development by asking a number of questions about many outstanding issues which the electoral commission did not take any action to resolve. The most important issue was of the displaced and how to make a biometric recording of them with the observation that most of them do not have ID documents, As well as the issue of non-adoption of the budget and the issue of the provinces where there were no elections, are all outstanding issues and there is little time left to hold elections despite all the demands to find real solutions to these outstanding problems.
After the participants finished the interventions, the MP responded to the comments and questions that had been raised.
It should also be noted that Tammuz Organization for Social Development is ready to monitor the elections to be held on 12 May 2018 through participation in activities and events organized by official bodies and organizations and training of observers to ensure the integrity of the elections.
