Tammuz Organization participates in delegation of Iraqi Women Network to visit Iraqi Foreign Ministry

 On 20 May 2019, Represented by Ms. Vian Sheikh Ali, Chairperson of the Organization Tammuz Organization for Social Development, the organization participated in the delegation of the network of Iraqi women and met with Ambassador Berikhan Mahmoud, Assistant to the Head of the Human Rights Department of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. The visit was for the purpose of reviewing the efforts of NGOs to follow the progress of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination (CEDAW) and the readiness of civil society organizations to present the Shadow Report to the CEDAW Committee. The meeting also highlighted the importance of strengthening the government's efforts to implement the joint statement to address crimes of sexual violence and what women face of gender-based violations and violence against them because of the lack of national mechanisms that contribute to the reduction of these crimes that cause violence, oppression and inequality. As well as the efforts of the women’s group to lobby for protection for victims of sexual violence. At the end of the meeting, Ambassador Berikhan Mahmoud stressed the importance of communication and coordination with local NGOs in order to follow up Iraq’s international obligations on human rights and follow up the latest international reports on the situation of human rights in Iraq and receive them and refer them to the concerned authorities. The Ambassador expressed her admiration and support for the efforts of women’s organizations in defending women’s issues and working to empower them and improve their status.
