The Advancement of Women’s Status in Iraq


On 12/9/2019, at the headquarters of Tammuz Organization for Social Development, a dialogue session was held in the presence of a number of female activists of civil society organizations as well as of Kahramana group. They all met Ms.Herta Doibler Gmilin, a politician and the former German of Justice. The   officers of Fredriche Ebert also attended the meeting, the point of which to be familiar with the Iraqi women’s status, search for solutions and to contribute to the advancement of the Iraqi women’s status.

The meeting was initiated by welcoming guests and introducing them to each other and discussing the most important women’s issues. Some female activists of Kahramana group and of Civil Society Organizations mentioned the most focal demands for the advancement of Iraqi women’s status. Their demands can be summarized as follows:

-Lobbying to legislate a law against violence against women.

-Domestic violence combatting law.

-the importance of women’s political participation.

-work to build the capacities of young women.

-to legislate a law to eliminate harassment.

But there is a continuous conflict and lack of security, stabilization, non-equality, discrimination and violence against women, as well as threats faced by women.

At the end of the meeting, Ms Heerta Doibler Gimlin, extended her thanks and gratitude to the organization of Tammuz and to the Civil Society female organizations and female activists of Kahramana Group.
