Community Initiative on the Voluntary Social Security Law and Mechanisms for Benefiting from It in Thi Qar
Sarah Haitham, a graduate of the sixth generation of the Youth Leaders Program from Thi Qar Governorate, implemented an awareness-raising initiative with the support of Tammuz Organization for Social Development. The initiative consisted of a seminar on the Voluntary Social Security Law and the mechanisms for benefiting from it, held on Sunday, 30 August 2026.
The initiative was implemented in cooperation with the Women’s Affairs Department and was attended by Mr. Haider Saadi, representing the local government; Ms. Alyaa, Director of Women’s Affairs at the Social Security Department; and Ms. Alaa, Director of the Women’s Affairs Department. The event was also attended by representatives of civil society organizations and government institutions, as well as a group of young people, women, and workers interested in benefiting from the social security system.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary social security, the registration procedures, and the mechanisms for benefiting from its services, while enhancing awareness of the rights and benefits provided by the law to different segments of society.
The seminar also addressed the concept and importance of social security in providing social protection, as well as the conditions and procedures for registration and the possibility for unemployed individuals, private-sector workers, working women, and housewives to benefit from the system. Participants’ questions regarding contributions, rights, and benefits provided by the system were also addressed.
The seminar further emphasized the importance of intensifying awareness campaigns on the Social Security Law and strengthening cooperation between social security departments, government institutions, and civil society organizations. Particular attention was given to raising awareness among women, young people, workers in the informal sector, and unemployed individuals about their rights and their eligibility to benefit from the social security system.
This initiative is part of a series of community initiatives implemented by program graduates after completing the program, as part of their social responsibility towards their communities and with the aim of serving the community and raising awareness on various social and humanitarian issues.
It is worth noting that the Youth Leaders Program aims to develop community leaders and is implemented annually by Tammuz Organization for Social Development in partnership with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES). To date, six generations have graduated from the program, comprising more than 160 young men and women from different governorates, religions, sects, and ethnic backgrounds.
