Awareness Workshop on Violent Extremism in Dhi Qar

Tammuz Organization for Social Development, in cooperation with the Subcommittee for Combating Violent Extremism in Dhi Qar Governorate, held an educational workshop in the Fadhiliya subdistrict of Suq Al-Shuyoukh under the title: “The Impact of Extremism on the Family, Society, and the State Alike.” The workshop took place on Tuesday, 17 June 2025, and was attended by the subdistrict director, Engineer Murtadha Abdul Razaq, along with administrative and technical staff.

The session was led by colleague Razzaq Obeid Dhahir, who gave an introductory presentation on the concept of extremism and the early traits that tend to appear in extremists. He used practical examples to illustrate how the phenomenon takes shape and then highlighted the vital role of supportive actors in confronting extremism—particularly tribal leaders, religious figures, active civil society organizations, and media outlets. He stressed that cooperation among these parties is essential in reducing and drying up the sources of extremism.

The session also featured discussions and questions from participants, along with various suggestions on fostering proper education for children and youth to instill values of tolerance and moderation and strengthen society’s resilience against extremism.
