Tammuz Holds a Workshop on the Role of Universities in Promoting Social Peace and Rejecting Extremism and Violence

Tammuz Organization for Social Development, in cooperation with the Subcommittee for Countering Violent Extremism in Dhi Qar Governorate, organized a workshop at the College of Science at University of Thi-Qar under the title “The Phenomenon of Extremism and Violence: Causes and Prevention Mechanisms” on 20 May 2026, with the participation of a number of faculty members and students.
The workshop was delivered by Razaq Obaid Dhahir, who discussed the concepts of extremism and violence and the historical background of these phenomena. He also highlighted the main causes and factors contributing to their spread, in addition to presenting real-life examples from various societies, including Iraqi society, and the negative impact these phenomena have on social peace, stability, and development.

The workshop further emphasized the important role of universities and educational institutions in enhancing community awareness and promoting the values of tolerance and moderation through awareness activities, workshops, and programs aimed at protecting young people from extremist ideologies and strengthening their positive role within society.
The workshop also witnessed active discussions and interventions from participants, who stressed the importance of supporting academic research related to extremism and violence, involving students in awareness activities and workshops, and strengthening the role of youth, media, and religious institutions, as well as civil society organizations, in promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence and countering hate speech and extremism.
