Meeting with the President of the Republic of Iraq
At the invitation within a delegation of Iraqi Women Network, Tammuz Organization for Social Development participated in a party to celebrate the completion of finalizing the preparation of Domestic violence bill, and the national authority bill to empower women. The party took place on 15 September 2019, with the presence of a wide number of MPs, UN- Women representatives in Iraq, civil society organizations representatives and journalists.
President Barham Salih, opened the party by delivering a speech that he started with welcoming the attendants and talked about an important bill to be submitted to the parliament.
He added that this bill came as a result of many active efforts exerted by different sides, such as civil society organizations and others who are concerned in achieving the principle of citizenship and the promotion of constitutional percepts in the country , the main goal of this bill is protect the family as well as protecting every member of the family especially women and children , which is in line with our religious and social values urging on the importance of respecting Human rights and dignity.
The bill considered domestic violence as a crime for which there is a legal accountability. Subsequently, any previous legislations that is incompatible with giving victims their rights, should be cancelled. He also mentioned the formation of a higher committee for combatting violence presided by minister of labor and social affairs. The committee is going to handle policies separation, programs adoption, and regulation of measures that ensure prevention of all forms of violence.
Moreover, the bill stated on the formation of a general directorate in the ministry of home affairs which is going to handle protecting the family, receiving complaints of victims, his Excellency also stressed on the formation of a specialized court to handle investigation on the domestic violence cases, the facilitation of reporting and complaining for victims.
