A legal session on the proposed amendment to the Personal Status Law in Dhi Qar
“Women for Democracy” project team, implemented by Tammuz Organization for Social Development in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Department in Dhi Qar Governorate, held a legal session on the proposed amendment to Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959 on Monday, August 5, 2024.
The session was attended by legal experts, activists, and academics, with the aim of comparing the current text of the law with the proposed amendment and discussing the social and political dimensions that led to the amendment proposal, as well as the extent to which the proposed amendment aligns with international conventions.
The session concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which are:
1. The proposed amendment conflicts with the international agreements signed by Iraq and is inconsistent with the national strategies related to women and children.
2. Political bargaining and conflicts should be kept away from sensitive laws that affect the lives of citizens, such as the Personal Status Law.
