Tammuz organization for Social Development in Cooperation with the Iraqi Democratic Future Network Conducts training sessions for election observers in Iraq

 In cooperation with the German Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and with the support of UNOBS and the United Nations Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Iraqi Democratic Future Network, Represented by Tammuz Organization for Social Development in Iraq, conducted the training of observers for the elections of provincial councils through the holding of (400) workshop in Baghdad and the other provinces where through these workshops, more than (10000) observers of both sexes have been trained within the Iraqi Democratic Future Network in preparation for monitoring the electoral process for provincial elections scheduled to be conducted on October 1, 2008.

A total of 100 workshops were held in Baghdad province to train the observers for the upcoming elections and the rest of the training workshops were held in all provinces of Iraq during the period from 1/3 to 5/4/2008, which was managed by Tammuz Organization for Social Development with all its staffs in the field of training observers for the elections.

The workshops focused on explaining the main principles and the definition of the purpose of monitoring and how to conduct the monitoring of elections and the rights and duties of observers as well as their role in accordance with the laws of the Electoral Commission for elections, in addition to the participation of trainees in small workshops on practical training on how to observe the election day and all related to the monitoring of the preparations and information, etc.

The training process is carried out by trainers who had previously participated in training courses prepared by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the United Nations in Amman during the past months.

The holding of these training workshops is the first phase of the project and the second stage will be implemented when the real monitoring process takes place during the voters’ registration and Election Day.

It is worth mentioning that the Tammuz Organization has already worked on many projects and activities related to the previous elections in Iraq, where it monitored the three elections (the National Assembly, the referendum on the constitution and the election of members of the Iraqi parliament) after the training of observers in Amman and the whole of Iraq.

In addition to the implementation of many activities for awareness rising and education on the elections and the need to participate in, and the importance of the Constitution and explain the draft before the referendum process.
