“Water issues and their impact on environmental displacement in Dhi Qar Governorate”

Women for Democracy project team, implemented by Tammuz Social Development Organization in Dhi Qar, in collaboration with the Iraqi Women Network, organized a dialogue seminar on the water problem and its impact on environmental displacement. This seminar took place on Friday, July 26, 2024.

The seminar was attended by activists and individuals interested in environmental issues and climate change, as well as representatives from the Dhi Qar governorate administration. Its purpose was to address the water problem in Dhi Qar, examining both natural and human-related causes, and understanding its effects on living organisms. Additionally, the seminar discussed the environmental displacement of the population.

During the event, a study was presented highlighting the significant climatic impacts on the environment in the southern provinces, including Dhi Qar. For instance, the region has experienced a substantial decline in fishery exports from the Al-Jabayish area, reaching 0% after previously exporting around 90–100 tons daily.

Furthermore, discussions covered several important topics, such as seasonal water variability, salinity issues, Iraq’s water policy, water pollution, food security, and population displacement.

It’s worth noting that this activity is part of a campaign carried out by Women for Democracy project teams in Dhi Qar and Najaf. The campaign aims to raise community awareness about the effects of climate change on society at large, with a particular focus on women.
